Moira McTague works from her studio in rural North Yorkshire and is also a member of West Yorkshire Print Studio. Being the daughter of parents from Edinburgh, she still has close connections with Scotland and regularly stays in Dumfries and Galloway. A painter and printmaker, specialising in etching on copper plate, her work is grounded in observation, hours getting to know and understand her subject matter and forming connections with it.
As an etcher, the physical processes of working on the etching plate, the infinite possibilities of etching methods and the beautiful qualities of line and tone that can be achieved become as important to the artist as her subject matter.
A recent residency at Nidderdale Museum inspired a series of etchings and led to working with new methods of intaglio type etching alongside traditional methods. She produced a series of etchings that developed from drawings of nests and eggs but also incorporate symbolic references to the theme of human migration.
In 2014/15 Moira was selected as one of the Yorkshire artists to participate in Connections North, Mirror Images, an International printmaking project with artists from Finland, Scotland and Sweden working to the theme of ‘a sense of place’. She has produced multi plate photo litho prints based on family research, emigration and trips to Ireland, exploring connections with the environment and links to the past there and how they inform the present. This work is ongoing.
She uses daily journals to annotate in note form and drawings, things she sees and experiences- sometimes it is enough to see the shape of a bird, feather or flower, to want to capture it for its own sake- to explore and rejoice in a tiny element of the world.
She has exhibited widely both Nationally and Internationally including being selected for the Laing Landscape Exhibition, (prize winner), ‘The National Print Exhibition’, Mall Galleries, London, ‘Originals’, London, ‘North Lincolnshire Open’, Harrogate Open, Edinburgh Art Fair, ‘The British International Mini Print’, ‘International Mini Print’, Norwalk U.S.A.
