Name: Niki Crew

Medium:Glass

“I have been working as a freelance artist and maker since graduating with a fine art degree in Printmaking from LCA&D in 1989. Eight years ago, I trained to teach and work at Chipping Campden School in the Cotswolds.  I have always maintained my own practise and love experimenting with different media. Whilst studying for an MA at Oxford Brooks, I conducted research into craft education and through this, I experimented with many different craft skills. Under the tutelage of local glass artist, Laura Prudden I began fusing recycled float glass, I became hooked on the process and decided to sell my printing press and equipped my studio with a small kiln.

My pieces are created by cutting and firing glass with ‘inclusions’ – a term describing the process of trapping various materials between pieces of glass, such as copper and silver which react differently when fired to specific temperatures. My inspiration comes partly from the Gloucestershire countryside but more often from the coastal landscape and fishing industry of Cornwall. The fish, like the birds are not designed not to be too anatomically accurate, although they are loosely based on the Cornish pilchards and mackerel”.
