Artist Statement

My work is concerned with drawing attention to things not usually considered typical art subjects.  In particular I am drawn to objects or places that have pattern or beauty because of functional design as opposed to any deliberate aesthetic choice.

It is important to me that my work shows the beauty of the subject merely by presenting it as it is rather than heightening or exaggerating for artistic or dramatic effect.

I paint in a detailed, realist style to encourage the viewer to look closely at something they would pay little attention to when encountered first hand.  I want to make images that have a quietness and stillness to them that many of the images competing for our attention in daily life lack.

I carry a camera whenever I can and base my paintings on the photographs I take. I am interested in the contradiction of trying to create illusionary space from a two dimensional image. I paint the sides of my canvasses to acknowledge this contradiction.

Among many others my influences include the painters Edward Hopper, Charles Oppenheimer and George Shaw and photographers Edward Burtynsky and Thomas Demand.  I also consider amateur and documentary photography to be extremely influential on my work.

I was born and raised in Inverness before undertaking a degree in Drawing and Painting at Grays School of Art in Aberdeen.  I graduated with an honours degree in 2001 before returning to undertake a Masters in Fine art in 2003.  During my M.A I became interested in education and completed a P.G.C.E in secondary art at the University of Exeter in 2004.  I am currently living and working in Kirkcudbright in Dumfries and Galloway.
