Handweaving a Silk Scarf
Dorothy Stewart is a new addition to the gallery, we are lucky enough to have two of her gorgeous silk scarves on display at present.
If you’ve ever wondered how much work goes into weaving, then this series of photo’s and step by step guidance by Dorothy will be really interesting. It goes some way to illustrate how much skill, effort, time and patience is involved in anything handmade, and emphasises the value in purchasing handmade over mass-produced, machine made products. Process:
Winding the warp, 360 ends of silk 8 yards long Threading each thread through a ‘heddle’ Three threads at a time ‘slewed’ in the reed to make the warp 10” wide All threads tied on to the front apron so all 360 threads under control ! Sample completed to check for threading errors ! Scarf started with hand hem stitching to make a neat edge. Now the easy bit starts !! Only 2 metres to go them a row of hemstitching and the first scarf will be finished !
