Georgina Bown

Award winning Artist Georgina Bown has been based near the East Lothian coast for over 20 years. The proximity to the sea has formed a fascination with sea-going vessels and the huge man-made monsters of the deep. Submarines have become a focus due to their mechanical excellence, sculptural and hydrodynamic form, intimidating presence and power.

Her inquisitive nature not only lies in the three-dimensional form but with the incredible stories connected to them and the submariners who serve on them.

Georgina divides her time between printmaking, drawing, sculpting and teaching. She has Exhibited at major Exhibitions in Scotland and London. Amongst these she was selected for ‘Masters of Mono-Printing’ at The Bankside Gallery and ‘The Derwent Drawing Prize’.

Georgina has developed her own drawing technique of
Mono-Prints where she produces unique one-off Artworks. In this challenging process she can’t lean on the paper or rub anything out, it relies completely on her confident free-hand drawing. Some of her creations are intimidating, some fluid and elegant giving thoughts of silent creations coming up from the depths, mysterious, threatening, strong yet gentle.

A background in metal sculpture facilitates an appreciation of the engineering and construction of these vast, beautiful beasts. She normally draws the Submarines out of water to expose their sculptural form which normally hides beneath the sea’s surface. By suspending them or drawing them on blocks she can render them defenceless and vulnerable.

Georgina is interested that these incredible machines are designed purely for their specific function which she finds inspirational and beautiful.
Georgina also likes to morph together these machines with aquatic mammals such as whales so their structure is combined. She’s fascinated with all forms that are designed or evolved through time to improve their specific function. Combining the fabrication techniques of the man-made form with the organic evolution of deep sea creatures Georgina creates new species. These are both drawn and sculpted into large engineered three-dimensional artworks.
