Statement
“I have developed a unique technique mixing beeswax with highly detailed pencil drawing and layers of metal and other precious, elemental materials.
This gives the figures I draw a sculptural feel, as though they are carved in wood and fixed in time. Using people and the rich traditions around figurative works allows for the layering of emotion and meaning into my carefully crafted compositions.
These works you see here are from a series called ‘Reliquaries’; they are what I imagine future reliquaries to be. They hold sacred our ecosystem and all its precious inhabitants, inspired by medieval reliquaries that were often carved in wood and supposedly held the bones of long dead saints or other fragments of religious importance. These stunning, sculptural drawings contain actual mini-beasts and precious natural objects. They are gilded with 23 carat gold leaf and framed to archival standard with museum glass.”
