Artists Statement
My main interests are in printmaking, painting , artists books and creative writing. Over the last few years my work has been shaped by visits abroad and collaborations with writers.
In 1999 I formed Cacafuego Press with writer Tom Pow and spent time researching and producing Artists books .
In 2002, and 2012/3 I was visiting lecturer at Rochester Institute of Technology in New York State with an emphasis on Artists books
In 2005 I began my own imprint Roncadora Press to allow me to make more one-off and personalised artists books ,and poetry pamphlets.
I have led numerous workshops in printmaking and bookarts in national institutions in the UK Ireland and USA
Having spent 35 years as teacher and tutor in all forms of education, I continue to teach workshops and masterclasses and enjoy working with young people and community groups.
In the last ten years my work had become more focussed on publishing poetry pamphlets and making artists books. The lockdown has allowed me to return to painting using favourite objects from home and garden.
Cacafuego Press
Books from Cacafuego are in the collections of the National Library of Scotland,
Library of Congress Washington, Wallace Library, Rochester, Carey Graphic Art Collection New York and Wexford Artists Book Collection as well as numerous private collections.
Tom and Hugh were Book Artists in Residence in Wigtown Book Town as part of Year of the Artist 2000.
Cacafuego books formed the basis of two touring exhibitions from Gracefield Arts Centre, Pagemakers and My Dad was a Cowboy.
Cacafuego Press has exhibited as part of Stanza Poetry festival in 2005/ 2009/2016
Collaborations with Writers and Roncadora Press
As well as Cacafuego and Roncadora projects, I have produced bi-annual publications with poet Hayden Murphy for the last twenty five years, these were exhibited in the Irish Consulate in Edinburgh in June 2008 and 2014 and again in 2018
Collaborations with poet Hugh McMillan are regular and ongoing and
Postcards from the Hedge by Hugh McMillan published by Roncadora Press won Calum MacDonald Memorial Award in 2009 and Sheeppenned by Hugh McMillan and Hugh Bryden won it again in 2017
Roncadora Press which I run singlehanded, has since 2005 published over 30 books, mainly poetry pamphlets, all handmade and illustrated by me.
An exhibition of Roncadora books and artwork toured in 2012 to Gracefield Arts Centre, StAnza national poetry festival, The Mill on the Fleet, Grange over Sands, A’ the Airts Sanquhar, Bellingham Northumbria , The Hexham Book Festival. Roncadora books featured in the open day exhibition at the Royal Festival hall September 2014.
Roncadora Press books have been shortlisted for the CMMA at the National Library of Scotland every year since 2008 and Roncadora has been shortlisted for the Michael Marks Award at the British library in both the Poetry and Publishers category.
Roncadora books are in major collections throughout the world and are now exhibited and represented by Central Booking New York.
Creative Writing
I joined Dumfries Writers in 2005 and designed and have designed and produced their anthologies since. I instigated The Fankle a vehicle for writers in D&G
In 2007 I took part in DGAA’s prestigious Poetry Doubles reading with Liz Lochhead. My writing continues to develop, I have had work published in literary magazines Lallans, Markings and The Eildon Tree and Chuckies fir the Cairn an anthology of contemporary Dumfries and Galloway poets. Two pamphlets of my illustrated poetry were published, one of which, If Ah could talk tae the Airtists was shortlisted for the Calum MacDonald Memorial Award in May 2008.
