Nicky Sanderson

Nicky Sanderson is from Edinburgh, based full time at Coburg House Studios in Leith. She works as a painter and printmaker and is inspired by a sense of place and the many visual interpretations of underlying geology, local story and the natural world.

“I am always scrutinising my surroundings for unusual colour combinations, patterns and textures, looking for the story underneath the visible. I strive to work intuitively and to find a narrative within my chosen area of study, trying to understand nature, and interpret it through the medium of collage, paint and print. Recently I have become intensely interested in the islands of the Firth of Forth, because they are on my doorstep, but also because they are ancient geological marvels. Islands have fascinated me for many years, especially the Outer Hebrides where layers of stone and peat, and human intervention on the land, have long been the source of my investigation of different mediums and ways of working.”

Nicky studied Printmaking at Gray’s School of Art, Aberdeen and at Post Graduate level at the Slade School of Fine Art in London, following which she was awarded a year’s scholarship by the National Institute of Fine Arts (INBA) to study experimental printmaking in Mexico City.

She is a member of the Society of Scottish Artists (SSA), Visual Arts Scotland (VAS) and Edinburgh Printmakers (EP).

Nicky has exhibited widely and spent many years teaching art to adults and co-directing a successful art holiday business.

As a parallel venture, Nicky trained as a Scottish Tourist Guide (Blue Badge), travelling all over this fascinating, breathtaking land, on a continuous learning curve, in awe of the wide variety of inspiring land and coast.

In recent years she has taught the Scottish Art module for trainee tourist guides, and regularly leads courses for the creative travel company Wild at Art Scotland, involving en plein air information gathering and studio development work.
