Paul Kirkwood

Paul Kirkwood Paul studied drawing and painting at Duncan of Jordanstone College, from 1978-1982.

Paul returned to painting full-time in 2022 after a successful career in Edinburgh’s visual arts scene. His partner (also a painter) and he invested in a garden studio, creating a dedicated space for exploration.

Originally focused on representational painting, Paul has shifted toward a more challenging, abstract approach. He enjoys deconstructing familiar imagery, moving it from realism toward abstraction. Living near the iconic Forth Bridges, he draws inspiration from the rugged beauty of the estuary, daily shoreline walks, and the ever-changing sea.

His work is a dialogue between mark-making and paint, influenced by Scotland’s rich tradition of surface-driven painting and the expressive language of Cornish seascapes.
