‘I was born in Perth in 1980. I am married to Becca, and we have two small children, Aimée (10) and Harris (8).
I have an MA (Hons) Fine Art (With Distinction in The History of Art), from Edinburgh University and College of Art. I also studied at Florence Academy of Art, to where I was sent for two separate overseas study periods. My University dissertation was on the restoration of oil paintings, which was led from studying old master drawing and painting techniques at the Florence Academy of Art. My degree show was oil and graphite portraits of my friends.
I have exhibited in New York, London, and all over Scotland, and over the years have won various awards. I also appeared on Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year, where I got the semi-finals!
My work at present is greatly inspired by my climbing and hiking in the Scottish highlands (I and Katy the Border Collie have been on the summits of the Munroes almost 300 times). I am fiercely proud of Scotland’s natural beauty, and love the feeling one gets at the summit of a Munro – that sense of a personal connection to, and almost an ownership of, the land itself. Light is probably the most important thing in my work – its play and its transient nature, especially in the highlands.
As a Born-Again Christian, I am invariably struck by the realisation of how small a human being is, when faced with the vastness of God’s creation. While this is definitely felt in severe and rapidly changing weather conditions, like a white-out blizzard or an Autumn storm, it is sometimes in the quiet and restful landscape that it is felt most acutely.’
