Stephen Finch

Stephen is an Edinburgh-based designer-maker of bespoke wooden furniture using traditional joinery techniques and modern production methods. His work is precise with great attention to detail and is meticulously hand-finished to the highest quality.

As a materials-based designer-maker, Stephen has a keen eye for selecting interesting grain patterns and character timber to use in his work. He has a depth of knowledge earned through hands-on experience in all aspects of running a small hardwood sawmill. Using locally-sourced wood gives his work a palette of tones, grains and character that reflect the natural environment and Scottish landscape.

Primarily self-taught, Stephen attended Jewel & Esk College in 2004 before taking up bench space at Woodschool in 2005 and later Real Wood Studios, where he worked on a wide variety of in-house projects and private commissions. Projects included bespoke interiors for Plummerswood Passivhaus and Borders College Campus at Galashiels.

In 2015 he relocated back to Edinburgh and recently has set up his own workshop at Newbattle Abbey, near Eskbank.

Stephen strives for an elegant and simple aesthetic which makes the best use of the timber’s characteristics combined with his own craftmanship. Often using a single piece of wood as inspiration, he creates furniture to cherish for generations.
