Tom Cooper

Designing and making furniture to me is not just about fulfilling a practical need, but is more about an artistic and aesthetic expression.

I see bespoke furniture as useful sculpture that embellishes people’s homes and lives, with the added value of serving a function, inducing feelings of comfort, ergonomic satisfaction and tactile enjoyment and warmth from touching the beautiful Scottish woods that I use.

It is a combination of the grain and patterns in these woods along with the shapes and forms found in nature that inspire many of my designs, incorporating flowing organic lines and highlighted with original design details.

The challenge though I enjoy is marrying these fluid shapes with a consideration for practical purpose, making my furniture both aesthetically appealing and a pleasure to use, which also comes from my meticulous attention to detail and continual efforts to achieve the highest levels of craftsmanship and quality in construction.
