About the Artist

Ben Brotherton graduated from Canterbury with a 1st class BA in Fine Arts in 2002 and an MA in painting in 2004. After 3 years as artist in residence at The King’s School, Canterbury, Ben moved to the Gers Region in south-west France where he now lives with his family in an old farmhouse.

Ben has built a reputation for his wonderfully atmospheric en plein air landscapes, capturing the beauty of the French countryside and character of life in rural France.  Since those initial few years in France the human form has become central to his work.

He says “I like its complexity, which I strive to understand and distil in terms of shape making and colours. The nude lends itself particularly well to an imaginative, yet controlled, use of colour. Ultimately what I’m searching for is some sense of tranquillity, calmness; this is why the models are often at rest in my work, though there is always that potential of movement that human figure alludes to.”

Ben has exhibited in London with The Royal Society of Oil Painters and Royal Society of British Artists, was short listed for the Winsor and Newton Young Artist in 2006 and shows work regularly with Grandy Art in London and l’Oeil du Prince in Biarritz.
