About the Artist

Summer Coastal Landscape Collection

Hannah Duncan is a Swansea based contemporary jeweller and enamel artist who works predominately in enamel, silver and copper. Much of her work is inspired by British coastal landscapes, the south west coast of Scotland in particular.

In her final year at Hereford College of Arts in 2016 she began a collection based upon Carrick Shore where her family owns a holiday hut. In creating these pieces, Hannah also discovered her love for enamel and began exploring enamelling techniques, adding beautiful colours and texture to her jewellery. Since graduating she has continued to expand this collection and build upon these techniques.

Having visited Carrick throughout her life Hannah has developed a strong emotional attachment to the area – it is a place of escape and tranquility for her. The shapes used in her jewellery come from a combination of the ‘huts’ situated along the coast and the silhouettes of the coastal rocks. The colours, patterns and textures are inspired by different aspects of the coastal environment – land, sea, sand and rock. Each item features sand collected from Carrick’s beaches fired onto the surface of the enamel creating evocative texture – a tactile reminder of days spent at the beach.

During lockdown, Hannah added decorative enamelled copper bowls to her collections. These bowls also feature beach sand and are inspired by the patterns, ripples and ridges the tide creates on the beaches.
