Delia M Surplice studied Drawing and Painting at Edinburgh College of Art, 1989 – 93.
She lives in the Scottish Borders, which provides her with endless subject matter.
‘Nature absorbs my emotions, I also feel it mirrors them in every possible way. It is a gift to see my ordinary as simply extraordinary.
My use of colour is spontaneous. It is an expressive reaction to my subject matter. I love enhancing a tone or distorting a pigment to invoke emotion in myself and in others.
A green field is not just a green field, but a palette of colour and movement, shade and tone. I see yellows, pinks, red and blues, nothing or no-one stays the same.
It is very important to me in my work to try and make it look spontaneous. There is no moment that stays the same – every step, every breath, every thought changes the environment around me. I want my work to feel like it’s still breathing, still changing, still adapting to its environment.’
