About the Artist

Sarah Thomas is an interdisciplinary artist working in text, collage, photography and video. With a background in anthropology and a life lived from the equator to the arctic, her creative work emerges from lived experience and a curiosity about the interrelationship between humans and the natural world. In all media, her work seeks to achieve a layering of ‘voices’. She weaves stories from fragments and takes inspiration from non-linear rhythms and patterns found in nature.

Her collage practice is a ‘between the lines’ of her writing practice and is a crucial component of thinking it through. Made from magazines, flyers, old photographs, old books, antique wallpaper, antique newspaper, plant material, and packaging, they emerge slowly, both as a fermentation and a seed of the text, transforming discarded material into a new form.

Sarah’s short films have been screened at festivals and exhibitions internationally. Her photography has had solo and group exhibitions in UK and Kenya and she was part of a group exhibition at The British Museum. Her writing has been longlisted for the Nan Shepherd Prize and shortlisted for the Fitzcarraldo Essay Prize 2021.
