About the Artist

Drawing on the wild skies, seas and wilderness surrounding my Shetland Island home, my paintings and sculpture are created as a response to my immersion in the ever-changing drama and beauty of the landscape. By depicting and celebrating nature I aim to express the universal and enduring relevance of nature and our evolving relationship with the environment.

I use a broad variety of materials and methods, including large scale paintings incorporating metal leaf and sculptures in various media from traditional cast bronze to locally foraged, dried seaweed, mirror-polished stainless steel, and even decommissioned oil rig and a bird’s wing.

By embracing and incorporating the serendipitous finds from my Shetland environment I work within my locality, time and space to create works that form part of my own journey, as well as that of this island and the earth as a whole. Some works are my vision of the beauty I see all around me, others seek to open a dialogue about issues I see presenting themselves in grim reality, such as those of habitat loss, decreasing biodiversity, ghost nets/ by-catch and our relationship with the sea throughout our history.

My background stems from an honour’s degree in Three-Dimensional Design and experience as a designer specialising in creating architectural interiors for hotel and restaurant clients throughout the UK. I chose to focus my creativity entirely on painting and sculpture in recent years and now work full time on that personal manifesto in my Shetland studio.
