Description

Joshua Miles has a passion for the delicacies  of light in the landscape which leads him to explore from his local areas. He is always hunting qualities of light that evoke emotion. This is often the softer light that brings out the in between tones and greys most would miss.

The simplification of mark making and colour of the reduction woodcut process shows clearly his visual influence of the impressionists and his selective rolling had its beginnings in the Japanese woodcuts.

Joshua Miles was born in South Africa in 1967, he attended Michaelis Art School at The University of Cape Town, where he was awarded The Michaelis Prize in his final year. He has exhibited his paintings, reduction woodcuts and linocuts widely in South Africa for the past 25 years and has lived solely from his income as a full time artist. Joshua attributes his interest in printing to watching his aunt, art historian and artist Elsa Miles, doing wood cuts when Joshua was a child, and later, to Cecil Skotness who taught him the technical aspects of the medium at Michaelis.

His inspiration comes from Japanese linocuts and the impressionists style of mark making and he is drawn to capturing how light moves over landscape.

Joshua met and married his Scottish wife Angela more than 20 years ago and they have over the years lived between South Africa and Scotland. They have now bought a property in Kirkcudbright where they plan to live full time.
