Artist Statement:

These 3 “Fluid Vases” are from a collection I have been developing for a while. They are inspired by the essence of clay , Water and Earth; as we are, A body of water so to speak.

They were thrown on the wheel as large bowls in Stoneware, in  burnt umber and White clay body . Then turned , sculpted and compressed to form a shape that is steady enough to hold water and flowers  but are still able to move and rock.

The surface glazes, developed and chosen for their beautiful fluidity, vibrant colours , and smooth weathered feel , are layered and allowed to cascade down the vertical surfaces. They are one of a kind.

Together they remind me of the rolling hills and streams of the Sussex weald and Ashdown Forest, where they were made…

About the Artist

Anastasia Hille is a studio potter making simple but striking functional stoneware  and porcelain pots from her studio in  rural East Sussex.

She is inspired by the wide skies, wild downs and beautiful nature of the surrounding Ashdown Forest.

Her Mother was a Finn and gave her her Scandinavian Aesthetic taste for simple and striking colour and functional form that uplift and  frame flowers and food..

She loves the alchemy of clay work… the earth, the water and fire, the magical transformations and a connection with all peoples in cultures ancient and new through the very basic and intimate objects of domestic life..

She has  travelled extensively as an actress, and studied ceramics in museums around the world, learning throwing and hand building technique in studios  and courses in Sussex. Always learning and developing she particularly loves the Japanese technique   of carving and fluting  shinogi style, the process of carving that brings you into a mindful present..
