About the Artist

Artist’s Statement
“We have art so that we shall not die of reality”… For me, Nietzsche is one of the most profound and intellectually stimulating voices. For Nietzsche, art was not the imitation of nature, but a metaphysical complement that will enable the transcendence of nature itself. Art is the fundamental metaphysical activity of humankind. Similarly, Cézanne stated that art and nature present themselves as two parallel harmonies, existing alongside one another, thereby being equal. It is these liminal spaces, the transitional time and space between two ideas, that I find fascinating. The most common and ancient of these spaces exist in the threshold between culture and nature. As a printmaker, my work is concerned with the increasingly complex relationship we as humans have with our natural environment. I aim to show the simplistic beauty of the land, the complexity of systems and sophistication of nature to inspire us to higher reasoning of collective responsibility, discourse and education to nurture that which houses us.

Johann Booyens (SSA) is a Glasgow based printmaker. His work can be seen in several international collections including the V&A Museum London, Chinese Museum of Art and Culture Beijing as well as the IPEP collection in India. He has participated in numerous group shows and printmaking portfolios and collaborate with other artists exploring new ideas and techniques. He has a Masters degree in the arts (Cum Laude) and has been teaching and practicing since 2007.
