Lesley Mackay Artist statement March 2020
My paintings are a response to the Orkney landscape where I live. The movement and energy in the sea and sky, the wind and weather, and the perpetual waves and tides, are my inspiration. When I walk, swim and kayak the coastline I am gathering the sensations of being immersed in the light, temperature, sound and movement of the air, sky and sea. Back in the studio I try to capture a strong sense of place and keep the feeling of ‘being there’ going in the painting.
I work on canvas, wooden panels and paper, building and removing layers of texture using a variety of tools, and media such as acrylic paint, oil pastel, ink and graphite.
