Description

Heather Potten is a feltmaker based in Edinburgh. She has been working with felt since 2008, and has contributed to textile and home exhibitions around Scotland since 2011. Heather holds regular workshops in 3D and 2D felt.

‘Felt is fascinating.

Wool becomes fabric without weaving, sewing, knitting or spinning. Fibres interlock with the help of soapy water and the friction created by rolling, rubbing, throwing and, finally, shaping.

My interest in felt started over ten years ago and has only become more intense as I investigate its properties and possibilities.

The main component of the current collection is merino wool, at times combined with silk fabric and decorative blends of tencel, seacell, rose and silk fibres. The work reflects my findings as part of the IFA’s Certificate in Feltmaking Techniques, which has involved extensive sampling to discover the variety of textures, colour mixes, structures and density possible in felt. It ranges from delicate and wearable through strong and functional to fanciful and sculptural.’
