About the Artist
Fugitive Landscapes
In November 2019 I was invited by the Perle Hotel Group to carry out an Artists Residency at Glencoe House Hotel on the edge of Loch Leven. During the residency I discovered the work of Scottish Poet Liz Lochhead; the ‘Fugitive Landscapes’ collection is inspired not only by the magnificent landscape of Glencoe but also by Liz Lochhead’s bittersweet poem ‘Favourite Place’ which recalls the memories and anticipation of family journeys from Glasgow to Skye and the familiar milestones on the way. Many of the titles for this ongoing series of paintings are taken from this poem and others in the ‘Fugitive Colours’ collection of poems published by Polygon Books.
The paintings combine water-based oils and a variety of media including earth directly from the site, iron filings and copper oxide. Working directly onto canvases started ‘en plein air’ and from a series of sketches, the work reflects my response to the landscape and weather conditions I experience at the time.
