About the Artist
Born and bred in Dundee, Gail has lived and worked in both Glasgow and Edinburgh, and currently resides in East Lothian. During her time in Glasgow, she studied still life and figurative drawing at Glasgow School of Art.
She has been painting professionally for the past twenty years, successfully establishing herself within galleries across the UK – from London to the highlands of Scotland.
She has always been drawn to colour and this has become her primary influence. She often deliberately mixes styles within a painting to achieve her desired result. She paints across multi genres, from still life to landscapes/seascapes, from figurative to abstract and semi-abstract. Gail’s usual choice of medium is acrylic and, depending on the desired effect, she often goes beyond the use of paintbrush, with sponges, pallet knives, tissues, gold leaf, pen and ink, and even fingers being brought into play. Texture and layering, particularly on neutral tones in backgrounds, set the foundation and are used to accentuate brightly coloured subjects making them ‘pop’ – especially within still life works. However, always, the choice of colour pallet and tonal harmony is foremost in her mind. She considers a painting ‘finished’ only when she would gladly hang it on her own walls at home.
